Occupational English Test – An Alternative English Test to the IELTS for Doctors

Doctors who want to register with the GMC or apply for the PLAB test can now take an alternative English test to the IELTS.

Occupational English Test (OET) is an English language test administered by Cambridge Language Assessment and Box Hill Institute. It assesses reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, with an emphasis on communication in a healthcare environment. It is run in over 40 countries.

You can find out more on the OET website.

OET certificate will be valid for two years. Your certificate must be valid on the day you sit PLAB Part1.

If you have obtained the required scores in the OET (medicine version) over two years ago, you may be able to prove that you’ve maintained your English language skills.

You can do this by submitting your original OET certificate, and one of the following:

  • Evidence that you have successfully completed a postgraduate course of study, where all the elements of the course of study, including clinical activities, were taught and examined solely in English, within the past two years.
  • A reference from an employer or your tutor or lecturer on a postgraduate course of study from a country where English is the first and native language. The reference must cover at least three months in full time employment or study within the last two years. Download the reference form (pdf)
